June 2012 update

New Lucas 564 LED light upgrades now available!

The big news this month is the launch of my new Matchless Clueless web store featuring a range of LED lighting and other electrical upgrades for classic motorcycles.

You can visit the store here:
https://matchlessclueless.com/store/

I’ve been working on an LED rear light unit for my old Matchless motorbike for the last few months after finding that all of the after-market versions currently available either weren’t very bright or else weren’t very high quality and so didn’t last too long.

I therefore decided to design and build my own LED light unit that would fit snuggly inside the lens of my Lucas 564 type rear lamp, provide the same (or greater!) light output than a standard filament bulb, but that would also use only a fraction of the power.

A number of people enquired as to whether they could purchase one of these LED light units off me for their own bike and so I decided to make a small batch of them and make them available for sale via this website. So please have a look at my store which now includes both 6 and 12v versions of the light board, plus various fitting kits and adapters to make installation nice and simple.

I’ve also added various help and instruction guides relating to my LED lights to the website which you can view by following these links:

  • The advantages of LED lighting
  • Lucas 564 LED light unit installation guide
  • LED rear light connector options
  • Mounting hole templates for the LED light boards
  • LED lighting and the law

More products and versions of the LED lights will be added shortly as these are currently in development and are being tested on my own Matchless motorbike. So please keep tuned for further updates!

Regards, James

So last week I needed a spark plug and what do you know 2 new plugs were in box provided to me from the seller of the bike. So I get the 67 Enfield and promptly damage the rear light lens. Any idea where I might find a replacement
Not completely ruined but certainly needs replacing….any help. By the way the bike is running and sounds and rides great…….. already looked in the miracle box of extra parts
    Thanks in advance

Hi Boyd. Which rear light unit is it that you have? If it looks like the one shown a the top of this page it’s a Lucas 564 – the most popular type. Try typing this in to a search engine and you should get many options for purchasing one. Best to get an ‘original’ Lucas one (as opposed to the cheap repro versions) as they’re much better quality, although also more expensive.

Just spent a few minutes reading your Matchless blog. Enjoyed it. I’m into vintage jap bikes but always good to hear about old bikes being used and not stored out of sight. Too many bought for investment that never see the road. All the best. Vic
