6v extra bright white LED stop and tail light

Description

This 19 LED array is the brightest 6 volt stop and tail light unit available and provides excellent illumination of the rear lamps of most classic cars and motorcycles. It is compatible with both negative and positive earth electrical systems with internal circuitry to automatically correct the polarity. It is a dual intensity lamp which means that all of the LEDs illuminate for the tail light function and then they all become even brighter when the brake is applied. This gives excellent illumination of the rear lamp with a clear difference between the tail and stop light functions.

We have two versions of this LED unit available – this one has white LEDs and there is also an alternative 6v red LED available. So which to choose? The red version gives a brighter and more red looking tail light than the white version. The red lens of the tail lamp filters out other non-red colours so, by using red LEDs, more of the emitted light passes through the lens making the lamp look brighter. White LEDs emit just as much light, but much of the non-red part of the emitted spectrum is filtered out by the red lens of the lamp. White LEDs also tend to make the light look pink, rather than the deeper red of red LED lamps.

The downside of using red LEDs is however that the number plate illumination (if required) is not as effective. Some rear lamp units have a clear lens on the underside to direct light down onto the numberplate. Whilst using a red LED unit will make the stop and tail light functions brighter, the number plate illumination will not be as effective. Note that LED lamps are primarily designed to project the light out of the rear of the lens and as such the number plate illumination is usually not as good as when using a conventional bulb.

So choosing between the red and white LED versions of this lamp is a choice between maximising the tail and stop light visibility (for which red LEDs are best) or maintaining number plate illumination (for which white LEDs are best). We would recommend choosing the alternative red LED version as the tail and stop lights are usually the most important.

This 6v LED lamp is recommended for all classic motorcycle applications and in particular the earlier Lucas MT110, MT480, 525 and 679 models. It will also fit the Lucas 564 tail lamp, however our custom LED light board provides even better illumination for this particular model. This LED light does not fit the early pre-war Lucas MT210 and MT211 lamps which have very limited space inside. We do not currently have a 6 volt LED option for this tail lamp, but we do have 12 volt compact LED lights which fit perfectly.

The size of this LED unit is approximately the same as a standard filament tail light bulb so there should be no problems with installation. Just remove the old bulb and install this one in its place for significantly reduced power consumption. It has the standard BAY15D dual contact offset pin base which is sometimes also known as the 1157 fitment.
